I read an interview with Jim Shooter when he said it was his intention that Karate Kid be Japanese and Ferro Lad be black. Of course, in the latter case, all you'd see was his hands, but still...
No such luck. He was overruled by the extremely racist editor of the book. So instead of making history as (I think) DC's first black superhero, Ferro Lad instead made history as (I think) the first superhero to die and stay dead. (Shooter throwing a fit, I imagine.)
You know, with the reboot and with full-color printing now universal, it would have been so easy to color EVERYONE in their own particular shade of tan or brown.
