Upgrade [DCU]

I wrote this a while ago, but I never posted it here...

for [livejournal.com profile] jarodrussell: Stargirl in battle.

Upgrade

Courtney hit the pavement and lay there, dazed. Someone in the background was laughing, a lot, and Courtney wondered vaguely what the joke was. It seemed far away, like a television left on to give the impression of company. There was a scream of pain from across that distance, and Courtney slowly realized it was hers. She looked down and saw that her arm was covered in blood, but she was using it for leverage anyway, trying to push herself back up. Her fingers were still wrapped around her cosmic rod.

Well. Half the rod. The bottom part of the staff had broken off and rolled away.

Courtney glanced around the area. Wildcat and Mr. Terrific were unconscious, and the other members of the JSA were nowhere to be seen. Green Lantern was still up, engulfing the bad guy, Inversion, with green flame, but Courtney knew he would fail. Green Lantern drew his energy from a powerful source - the Starheart - but Courtney had held the power of all the stars in the sky, and it hadn't been enough.

Courtney looked down at the broken tool in her hand. She could tape the wires well enough to rejoin the battle, but with most of the staff gone so was her range of attack.

But. Here. If she crossed the wires instead. If she changed the frequency of cosmic energy absorption to something else: something deeper, and stronger, and barely theoretical…

Green Lantern's energy was flickering now. A few grey tendrils slipped through the green, and then they wrapped around each other and tore through Lantern's shield. Green Lantern screamed at the feedback and fell hard to ground, and Courtney could see that the edges of his body were losing definition, softening and taking a greenish hue. Inversion kicked him in the side a few times. He didn't move. "Well, then!" Inversion said. "Anyone left?"

"Yeah." Courtney climbed to her feet, clutching the rod to her chest. Her thumb covered the makeshift control.

He laughed. "The little girl! Why, hello, little girl! Are you going to shake your scary stick at me again?" He tilted his head and grinned at her, taking a step forward… and was swallowed by brilliant white light as she let loose a blast of energy universal.

Inversion screamed and twisted in the centre of the energy. The world shuddered around him, and he was a old man with dark pits for eyeballs. Again, and he was a giant insect monster. Again, and Courtney was holding a young man in jeans and a workshirt and no apparent Supervillain aspirations. And then he was Inversion, again.

"Oh," he said, and faded back to nothing.
