This would have been easier if I could draw.

I really should know better, but I clicked on a link to the DC message boards, topic of the new Frank Miller cover.

In summary... this is why I’m going to stay way the hell over here okay thanks. However, one exchange did catch my attention and would not let me shake it as it might have a sane person.

[livejournal.com profile] maelithil:
Depicting [women] as an ass, a pair of tits, some gorgeous thighs is doing them a disservice. Distilling them into nothing but their sexual attributes is objectifying. And that's exactly what this cover does.

Random Fanboy:
And notice that Superman's chest is OFTEN a whole panel unto itself. Not Superman fighting the bad guy. Not Superman standing full figure. Superman's chest. Just his chest. His huge, massive, S-draped, extraterrestrially muscular chest. Is Superman being objectified? Is he being used? Should I cry for Superman?

And. Just. What? This is the counterexample?

But! Maybe it’s not that his logic is just that scary. Maybe it's hard to understand what she’s talking about because it really, honestly is that there’s no comparable example featuring a male denizen of the DCU. I mean, even the occasional Nightwing crotch shot *tries* to have context.

Obviously, something had to be done. For The Good Of Fandom.

Luckily, much like Miller, I have no shame.

Totally Appropriate Covers (with bonus, never before seen script excerpts!)

Hal’s flying away from us through a generic starfield, nothing interesting to see except him. Have him wriggle around, giving us a good shot of his package. Add some details, something fancy for the fanboys to drool over, but don’t let it draw attention away from the point of the cover – that Kyle has nothing, NOTHING, on my boy Hal.

Be careful with this one – we don’t want Supes to come off as too powerful, too imposing. Maybe have him lean a bit, off balance, the better to show off his *well filled* briefs. He's fiddling with the waist line, such a cock *heh* tease. He knows he’s got what we want, and if we turn the cover, he’ll let us have it.

Well, we’ve done just about every variation on the theme by now, so let’s go back to the basics: Black on black, a full cover shot of Batman’s ass. Add in the utility belt for colour – give it that Sin City look. Show me thick, powerful legs under that latex or whatever the hell he wears. Clenched butt muscles. Make it obvious this is no BatGIRL we’re talking about.

*g* And I for you. (I've been AWOL from the internet for a bit, but your statue concept was inspired.) It seems that between us we're discovered what the internet was *really missing*.

I don't think the internet was missing exposed bubble-butts. Plenty of those around, just ask Jeff Stryker. But the mainstream comic scene - definitely needs a shaking up. LOL.

I feel a little weird about posting a comment so long after this was originally posted-- but this seemed potentially useful.

I'm a skinny girl with strikingly prominent ribs; the Wonder Woman cover actually wouldn't be far off from what I'd look like if posed like that-- with the notable exception that my breasts aren't that big, and besides, I don't know a single garment or material that would work the way her top does-- I mean, is that, like, a boobsock corset?

Anyway. Just wanted to weigh in on the question of protrusive ribs: the anatomy is all right there, in my own experience, it's just the costume that's a problem.

Hi. Me very much to like here. I shall advise this site to the friends.
I am sorry for my English. I only learn this language.

Uh, no. I admit, his All-Star Batman and Robin covers hurt my eyes, but look at his Daredevil run. He's not exactly Bryan Hitch or Alex Ross, but the man does have skill.

I know this is a blast from the past, but a friend just pointed me to this thread, and I have to tell you... the phrase "little green nutsack seam" just made me snarf my PB&J. Well played! :)

I must agree--in those iconic shots, you don't even get the edges of Superman's body. Yes, it's all his chest, but it's not ALL of his chest.

It's kind of like saying [ ] look, between those brackets back there there I have a segment of Wonder Woman's bare bosom drawn! What? Not erotic? Why not? It's part of... you know... her chest!

The way in which something is drawn and what is included and disincluded has a large effect on impact that you must take into account.

Oh man... I shouldn't reply, but I will...

Walking around college campus today, I see a number of girls dressed as I am, in not particularly tight pants and either a loose t-shirt or a sweatshirt. But you know what? YOU don't see them. Most guys don't. They see the sorority girls in the mini-skirts and tight tops with their tummies showing.

Do I care that guys don't notice me? No, because I have one and I'm very happy with him. But if I was looking for someone, I'd need to dress up just to be noticed by a large number of guys to whom I am invisible without my curves. :P Including you. Epic win, sir.

As for my gender being "sexy and beautiful," yours is too. However, the guys who present themselves as most appealing sexually are frequently branded as homosexuals. Most straight guys, faced with such a designation, would go back to dressing in shapeless sacks. Since so few guys make an effort to dress in a sexually appealing way, there's no pressure to do so in order to become "visible." This does not lessen the pressure on females.

Your stupidity and blindness sickens me.

Hope you don't mind...

I saw the one of the pics here on Stumble and came here to see what it was all about. I was inspired to write an intro story on my own blog. Of course full credit is given with a link-back. If you like...check it out and let me know what you think.

It can be found here:

I realize this is late, way late, but the sad thing is given FM's awful writing in ASB&R, that cover is not terribly off the mark...

[identity profile] fervid-unicorn.livejournal.com 2007-11-08 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm posting late, I know. My boyfriend just showed this to me today, and I just had to chime in. Like everyone else said, you did this brilliantly. Well done.

testing this one...

Men in Speedos with guns!

(Anonymous) 2007-12-07 12:11 am (UTC)(link)

Thanks so much for these images. I have always said that if men were seen in Speedos with guns, how rediculous that would be and it would show just how rediculous the objectification of women really is. My boyfriend is a comic book collector, and it pisses me off that he would support an industry that portrays women as T&A. I am so sick of this blaitent bullshit in comics, and even in the movies and on TV.From Witchblade to Sin City ect.we see mostly naked, anatomically incorect, unnatural, gravity defient women with big guns! Oh yeah and how about very young sometimes teen looking girls paired off with mid to old men? I better stop there. I could rant about this all night. The really sad part is that these images are literally killing our young girls. Thanks again. You are awesome!!!!!!!

I was trying to use this post as an illustration to a discussion on Slacktivist (http://slacktivist.typepad.com/slacktivist/2008/02/lb-in-these-sho.html#comment-102618674), and I was sad to see the Censorship Gods had made you take these pics down.

Are they available anywhere else?

[identity profile] phredd.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. I just came here too for the same reason for another discussion on a different forum.

[identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oops. Nah, it's not censorship - I let my paid account lapse a few days ago and forgot totally about my pictures.

I'll fix it.

[identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Er! I'll fix the links. Thanks for letting me know!

[identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com 2008-03-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, it should work now. :) I'm glad that they're still helpful.

Coming to this years after the fact - these pictures are still (sadly) relevant and snicker-inducing. Thank you for making them and the associated point.

As a straight guy, I wish the superheroes were drawn this way. It's better than having them drawn with the outrageously skintight costumes & no suggestion of genitalia at all.

male objectification

(Anonymous) 2008-05-05 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting stuff. I do think that males are objectified in our culture but the way in which we are objectified usually has little to do with images that parallel female objectification (i.e. as sex objects). Men are objectified as providers of money (security) and also as fantasy objects in an attempt to make a safe-feeling, insulating vision of romance appear as true so that the objectifier can, to one degree or another, see the world as an extension of her mind and not have to deal with her partner as a real person -- in a way, quite similar to what happens when a man watches porn and attempts to impose that fantasy into a real life structure -- on his wife or whoever. The unrealistic nature of this romance fantasy, coupled with the fact that reality always intrudes may explain why so many guys are called "dreamboat" one minute and "loser" the next without actually having changed.
In a parallel way to female sexual objectification, males also accept their objectification and attempt to live up to it.
Frank Miller was the artist who drew Robin as a female character in "The Dark Knight Returns." I think we are seeing some of his humor here, and it also seems like he's saying traditional comics have something homo-erotic going on. Knowing something about Miller, I see the covers as commentary on comics, not outright objectification.
