re: Wonder Woman's new origin

The most amusing (read: "amusing") thing is that a couple years ago, I was discussing Wonder Woman with someone who offered that "Wonder Woman makes guys uncomfortable."

Me: What, cause she can beat them up?

Her: No, because no man was involved in her genesis. Simply by her *existence*, she's a threat to the assumption of male necessity.*

But of course, I did not take this theory very seriously!

People the joke is on: ME.

*English major. I am paraphrasing, but I got the impression she'd just finished an essay on the topic.

I believe the list of events was as so...

Oliver Nome did a Wonder Woman redesign over here.

forty40dumbhott @ tumblr coloured it to show what he'd like in a Wonder Woman portayal.

It circulated around tumblr, until I eventually saw it and went yeaaaaahhhhh..... buuuuuuttttttt..... it is still white woman *lineart*, and added a couple tweaks of my own. )
I'll likely be hiding from the internet until Tuesday afternoon, when I'm finally done with exams, but I thought I'd share how impressed I was by the newsamara.com interview with the new Wonder Woman artist.

I have to admit, between the departure of Rucka from Wonder Woman and the solicit for the relaunch -

( Is she a martyr or a murderer? A politician or a super hero? Writer Allan Heinberg and artists Terry & Rachel Dodson provide surprising answers, giving Wonder Woman a fresh, sexy look and a bold new direction! )

- I was pretty sure I wouldn't be following the title any longer.

The interview with Dodson, well, didn't entirely change my mind, but at least made it more likely I'll be checking the book out come June.

... The things I really went for were strength and beauty. Attractive. Powerful. Noble. Godlike. Yet, we want to show her being human too, because you can come across kind of cold with those other aspects played up. Something we’re trying to avoid is making her overtly sexy. We wanted her attractive, but not overtly sexy.

...There are ways to do it, and portray it in a way that conveys the positive aspects of the character without giving in to the…dark side.

You just have to remember who you’re drawing and what she’s all about, and come into it with a healthy respect for the character. It’s so easy to go cheesecake and overtly sexy – but you can draw beautiful and powerful without overtly sexual.

...And you do have to go back a ways in art to find where the beauty was more important than the sexuality.

I really should know better, but I clicked on a link to the DC message boards, topic of the new Frank Miller cover.

In summary... this is why I’m going to stay way the hell over here okay thanks. However, one exchange did catch my attention and would not let me shake it as it might have a sane person.

[livejournal.com profile] maelithil:
Depicting [women] as an ass, a pair of tits, some gorgeous thighs is doing them a disservice. Distilling them into nothing but their sexual attributes is objectifying. And that's exactly what this cover does.

Random Fanboy:
And notice that Superman's chest is OFTEN a whole panel unto itself. Not Superman fighting the bad guy. Not Superman standing full figure. Superman's chest. Just his chest. His huge, massive, S-draped, extraterrestrially muscular chest. Is Superman being objectified? Is he being used? Should I cry for Superman?

And. Just. What? This is the counterexample?

But! Maybe it’s not that his logic is just that scary. Maybe it's hard to understand what she’s talking about because it really, honestly is that there’s no comparable example featuring a male denizen of the DCU. I mean, even the occasional Nightwing crotch shot *tries* to have context.

Obviously, something had to be done. For The Good Of Fandom.

Luckily, much like Miller, I have no shame.

Totally Appropriate Covers (with bonus, never before seen script excerpts)! )
