I felt like the first movie could be read as somewhat self-aware and tongue-in-cheek, although sadly I don't think a lot of viewers took it that way.
Afterwards, a couple teenagers in front of me looked puzzledly at each other. "That was a very American movie, wasn't it?" one of them said. Which I understand because pretty much that movie is what America-as-a-nation's moral philosophy looks like from other people's news.
