Thinking of signing up to the we love the women that the fandom hates fest for, surprise of surprises, Kara Zor-El.

If I do, would there be anything you'd be interested in seeing/having me talk about?

I am sorry to do this to you, because the dialogue is... well, if you've ever watched Smallville, you know what the dialogue is. But MAN this is some hardcore flirting between Lois Lane and Kara.

I suppose it's necessary that the scene ends there, because at the rate they are closing in on each other, they've got ten seconds before they're making out just thanks to lip proximity.

The ratio of Bizarros to Yaye was a bit high for my taste, but how happy am I that Supergirl: Science Hero is becoming a more central facet of the character with every new story?

The answer is: 7.6 units of happy. Or, somewhere between "pretty" and "very" on the quantified happy scale.

I came home with Batgirl #14, which was all sorts of fun. Spoilers are in favour of Batgirl/Supergirl. )
Good News: A Supergirl movie!

Bad News: It is based on Loeb and Turner's origin story of headdesk-ness.

SO MANY MIXED FEELINGS YOU GUYS.

I was talking with... [personal profile] poisonivory? [personal profile] greenygal? a while ago on the subject of (shock!) Supergirl, and we got to the part where I say I don't trust Mark Waid to write her because of the interview he gave once where he said he thought Supergirl's defining characteristic ought to be "sweet".

Because seriously, what is that. "Sweet" is not even a personality trait! It is a nonspecific catch-all from someone who doesn't know you very well, assuming you come off as a little bit shy or a little bit considerate or a little bit cute. No *wonder* Kara did nothing interesting when she headlined the threeboot Legion title. Dear Mark Waid, you do this professionally, you should know better.

So then I thought about what *I* would pick for Kara's defining characteristic. For context, I'm talking about the Supergirl baby!Karen built in her head out of Silver Age comics and has carried around with her since. There's recently been another wave of posts from fans who'd had trouble finding female heroes to connect to as kids. But I *did*, and I am glad for it.

Top 5 Kara character traits! )

There are more things I could say about Kara, but if you keep those 5, chances are I'll believe you wherever you spin the character. (And anyway, 5's such a nice round number.)

Myself, I tend to write her as somewhat angry and entitled and still bleeding from everything she's lost, and I know there are Supergirl fans who would shun me for such blasphemy. I think there's a level of alienness that she'll never (want to) lose, no matter how long she spends on our planet, and that she'll always think of herself as Kryptonian *first*. Oh, and she has superpowers, of course, of course.

HAY GUYS! SUPERGIRL DECIDED TO MARRY spoilers ). I WILL BE PLEASED FOREVER.

I've been rather non-personable* of late, and, uh, I'm not sure when that'll pass. But there's a link I've been meaning to pass on for *days*!

The Maid of Might website has opened a Supergirl gallery, which pleases me greatly. (GREATLY. Poor Michelle must be pretty frightened of me by now; she was already having to deal with my random HAY THEY REFER TO SUPERMAN HAVING A COUSIN ON PANEL 4 OF PAGE 13 OF A NOV 1978 COMIC IS THAT RELEVANT? emails. I enthuse because I CARE, OKAY!)

Maid of Might is a Supergirl fansite run from a fangirl's pov, so the gallery has a policy of accepting only non-exploitative** images. If you've ever tried to track down Supergirl pictures on the internets, you'll understand why this safe space is a exciting thing. If you're a fan, you should check it out.

I've been uploading my collection of Kara pics. (Slowly, believe it or not.) I... might be at it a *while*.

As an example, here's a lovely painting by Andy Lee. ) I love Lee's stuff. It's so vibrant and expressive.

(And now! Back to hiding.)

*My current conversation range is "I am mopey because jPod and the Legion cartoon got cancelled and I am out of TV favourites" to "I am mopey because I hate paperwork and I hate my cell phone and I suck at coding and my family continues to be a movie YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE IT." Really I am doing everyone a *favour*, here.

**Standard Disclaimer: I've got nothing against porniness, even porniness that plays to fetishes I don't share. But it's difficult to enjoy fanart if you're too busy steeling yourself against un-sought panty-shots (in the mild case), and anyway, there is every other gallery on the internet for that.

The previews for tomorrow's Supergirl comic are up, and this page has me a little bit concerned.

Kara: But think about it for a second. How are this guy's powers even possible?

[livejournal.com profile] odditycollector: "Noooo. Once you go down that route it is all logically disproving the existence of your universe!"
[livejournal.com profile] caia_comica: Oh dear!
Caia: That would be really, really bad.
Karen: Superman is trying to tell her that!
Caia: He *knows* that *their* powers don't stand up to any logical scrutiny either!
Karen: "You should not be one to talk, Kara."
Caia: *shakes head* She needs to stop this now, before she disappears in a puff of logic!

Karen: At least there seem to be words in this issue.
Karen: It's a nice change!
Caia: Yay WORDS.
Caia: Are there not usually?
Karen: It was the writer who invented Cass. I think he may have been having difficulty adjusting.

(All srsness, though, I totally approve of how Kara discovered some brains recently and will be picking it up. It's just that trying to find an internally consistent logic within their universe is why so many DCU scientists go MAD.)

Finally! An appropriately sized tribute to Supergirl's really, really huge love of books!

Although. Erm, actually. Maybe you guys would like to get a room? )

ETA: Backstory! (I love canon sometimes it is true.) )

[livejournal.com profile] dryponder has started a Draw Supergirl meme, along the lines of the famous Draw Batgirl meme.

So if you have drawn Supergirl, as I know is true of a few of you who might be reading this, you should head over and link him to your work. If you haven't... well, you should first draw Supergirl and *then* head over and link him to your work.

Yes, I AM rather enthusiastic about this. For one thing, I am totally shallow, and fully believe that there can never be enough pictures of Supergirl for me! (Seriously. Ask me what I did the week after I discovered there was fanart on DeviantArt.com.)

But mostly? I'm very interested to see where this goes. The Draw Supergirl meme has actually been around for a while before it was named. It's been showing up unlabelled in blog posts and forums and art communities, under titles like "Comic book thoughts" and "This is my Supergirl". Those more text-minded have offered descriptions of their internal canvas - what she's wearing, who she's with, what she's doing.

I've been thinking for a few days that the internet is supersaturated* with Supergirl-related emotions - excitement, annoyance, confusion, whatever: it's on the internet's collective mind - and now [livejournal.com profile] dryponder has thrown a seed crystal into the mix.

Maybe it'll go WHOOMP. Maybe it won't, but at the very least, there's some fun to be had.

*Sometimes I think like this. Strange but... mostly strange, actually.

Anyway, here's mine! (Disclaimer: not so much "drawn" as "manipulated".)

SUPERGIRL )

This week's DC Nation article is a plea on behalf of our my favourite Kryptonian.

Supergirl needs women! )

As a gesture, it's heartening. At the very least, they have decided that I'm part of a demographic they *want* to court, and have given effort (and page space!) towards doing this!

We've finally got confirmation on the thought processes behind Power Boy's character design, and I can't say I don't approve. And the example sketch they give us, with Kara distracted in battle by the power of his butt... Okay, I'm amused!

(Perhaps his "costume window" is in the wrong place?)

On the other hand? There are valid reasons I'm not buying this book. It's great that the problems with the art were discussed, but they haven't actually been *fixed*. I am honestly glad they choose to make Kara's story less simple this time around. Execution-wise, however, it's been a disaster.

I'm not sorry to hear Ian Churchill is off the title, of course, but I'm not won over by Ale Garza, either. (He's the one who drew the Supergirl story in the Infinite Christmas special.) In his rendition, that costume is especially painful to my brain.

So thank you for the invitation, Mr. Beganza, but I'll have to politely decline.

I would love to buy a Supergirl title. Sadly, judging by what has come so far, it won't be this one.

ETA: Brilliance.

Well, then. I think this calls for another in the the series of icons I did a while ago.

The latest installment. )

Hey, look! Someone took the new Supergirl action figure, and made it into something cool!

We're distracted from the gross anatomy *by* the gross anatomy. Genius!

ETA:
caia: --clearly this was MADE FOR YOU.
caia: *really kind of impressed*

caia: Current!Supergirl would look MUCH better as a zombie!
karen: More interesting stories, too.
karen: Zombie!angst.
caia: Yes!
caia: She is a zombie so NO ONE LOVES HER.
karen: OBVIOUSLY that is why.
The problem with giving an "Other" option in a poll is that, yes, people *do* have other options you haven't thought of. So you have to twist your brain around trying to make it *work*.

For example... )

And now I'm convinced Tim/Kara is a creepy and yet somewhat *compelling* possibility, given Current Events.

*disturbed*
