Erik looked at her for a moment, and then looked beside her at the zebra. The zebra pawed at the ground in what Erik imagined was indignation. Or possibly embarrassment.
He turned back to Charles. "This is a perfect illustration of my point," he said. "The universe itself is conspiring against me."
"Well, turnabout is fair play, after all," said Charles, making a valiant attempt to ignore the proceedings at the treeline.
(The zebra snapped and kicked at a localized whirlwind that was hitting it with pebbles. "Pietro!" Wanda shouted. "Leave St. John alone!")
Erik's expression began to darken further, and Charles sighed. "I'm only joking, my friend," he said. Although it's a good thing he doesn't know about that illegal government cloning program we-
