Okay. I am close to tired enough enough to sleep, which is still too tired to do anything productive, so instead I'm going to something which is almost but not quite the inverse of the fic-line-guessing meme that was floating around recently.

It'll work like this. *I*'ll put up some lines, chosen from random stories I've written, and you guys can tell me what story one or more of them are from.

Oh, not the actual fic that I wrote around them. That would be boring - I already *know* that answer - and besides, it'd be pretty crazy of me to assume everybody has my stuff memorized. Instead, make something up. If you saw only that bit written as a summary, what would you expect about the story? What fandom or pairing or circumstance? If you were given it as a prompt, what would you write? Knowing what you do of me, what might it have been?

(And hey, if you convince me, maybe I'll even write it. But maybe not. It's the thoughts that really really interest me at the moment, not the prompts.)

Anyway.

The lines. I've left any character names in, but if they get in the way, just pretend it says something else. That is, after all, the point of the exercise.

  • The shadows move. They take shape, gather into something solid. It stares at him through moulded, hollow eyes, and it’s something real after all.

  • There were times that I’ve woken, sweating and gasping for air, in the darkness before the sun. Or cold and shaking, with the hum of electrical wires ringing between my ears. Or hungry, and craving cheese sandwiches and bacon, when the only thing I could stomach was water. I’ve shared so many of your dreams, over the years. And I only have one.

  • Harry decided he wasn't about to risk opening his mouth, even for the nastiest curse he could think of (Avada Kedavra was quickly falling second in his mind to having your worst enemy licking at your face), and stomped hard on Draco's instep instead.

  • And Anathema just says, “I’ve been expecting you,” because Anathema is a witch, and that means she knows the easier words in Latin, and the proper use for mistletoe, and the name of the hag in the mirror.

  • “Your penis,” he said, using that strange tone of voice that meant he’d rather be mumbling but really didn’t want to repeat himself.

  • Science is a fickle lover, unfaithful and cruelly amused, and it holds its secrets close. It’s a lot like romancing a woman, in some ways.

  • Theodore sighed in relief. “I knew it,” he said. “I knew I was an Evil Genius.”

In my current state of exhaustion, this seems like the most fascinating thing ever. ('Though, I'm sure I'll have a different one for tomorrow.) If anyone else wants to do it, they should, because I'd love to play on the other side.

*laughs*

And, actually, that story would be *less* cracky than the original. Hmm.

I honestly can't imagine that being anything *but* a Midnighter/Apollo (the Authority) story. So what is it actually from?

*stares* Yeah, you know, I can really see that. And it's really creepy.

It's originally from a Charles/Erik song-prompt (http://www.livejournal.com/users/notassuch/20049.html), which deserves all the trepidation that phrase might earn. I liked that bit, however.
