Just now saw a picture of the rebooted Amanda Waller -- here's a link, which leads to a comic book rendering of a thin, young, conventionally attractive woman in a cleavage shirt and glossy red lipstick. Also she appears to be smiling somewhat vacantly.

The artist for the book was told that it was the Angela Bassett character, or Pam Grier, but that the actress was too thin and glam, & he got it backwards, & boom it's this.

I really liked how there was one female character so awesome she didn't need to be that. She just barged onpanel in all her short, fat, middle-aged, natural-haired, often terribly dressed glory and gave no fucks if someone like her belonged in a superhero comic. Any more fucks than she gave if she belonged in untranscribed oval office meetings.

The male gaze already has EVERY SINGLE OTHER FEMALE CHARACTER, you know? Have you seen the female costume designs? A new era of dignity Supergirl's red highlighted ass.

I was planning on checking out a few of the series - Supergirl, Static, and Action - just to see, but I don't think I can. I am too heartbroken to given acknowledgement to a universe where they ruined Amanda Waller.

(And the thing is. Okay. I probably treat Waller as a sexual being more than the rest of fandom put together, and never even *mind* the comics. But when I ship her with people I see no reason they wouldn't appreciate her *as she is*.)

The problem is ALSO NOT that they had to make her paperform somehow match the movie-form. The PROBLEM is that they didn't have the movie-version looking a damn thing like the paper/canon form in the first place. They could have cast a number of actresses with the gravitas, bodysize and affinity for natural hair. They didn't.

Yeah, I saw that excuse floating around. It is bullshit. From all I hear, the GL movie was a disaster, and no one cares if the comics match the movies anyway, or else a hell of a lot more about the DCU would have been altered every time a movie comes out. It is a justification that is occasionally paraded in the face of bullshit, but I believe that what's actually going on is, whatever, we do what we want.

My roommate had heard that they'd fucked Waller over, but we didn't know how. We were speculating on what it could be -- did they make her a scientist, like in the movie? Did they make her thin?

For a fleeting moment, we wondered if they'd made her white, then immediately wrote it off because what the hell that would be impossible. But there's a tiny, traitorous voice in the back of my mind who, given the way DC has been acting recently, wouldn't have been surprised.
