I don't like drabbles. I don't I don't.

But, lately, I've read some rather good ones, and there was an idea in my head that didn't seem to be much longer than a hundred words.

So I wrote one. Sandman, of course, because that's where my brain is. I have another one up there somewhere, so I'll try to find it, and then maybe I'll work on the depressing fic for a while.

Untitled Sandman drabble. Yes, sigh, I know...

Humans exist in a stable world, so they believe in archetypes, and give them power, and call them gods. But peoples change, and slowly their world alters until it’s as it’s always been - the old archetypes forgotten.

And they come to him now with offerings of gold and wine and credit card numbers. He is entreated to guarantee safe passage, bless the wings of mechanical chariots or grant invisibility from borderguards. They seek maps that lead ever inward and keys to doors that don’t exist.

They believe he has power, and he does.

And maybe some things are constant.

I feel like a sellout, but will justify this to myself with the fact I didn't try to tell a story, really. Nope. Absolutely useless piece of prose...

But you see why the song bugged me now, non?

Sigh.

I like it. It definitely packs the punch a good drabble does.

Drabbles are nice, if well-done and occasional, I think. ('Course, I also think that the shorter something is, the more flawless it has to be. 100 words doesn't give much leeway for clumsy writing. So I like drabbles just for the prose-sharpening opportunities.)

Hmm... Actually, I never thought of it that way. It seems more interesting from that light.

And thanks for the compliment. Means a lot, especially since I'm pretty annoyed with it. Dumb words, for what end must they concern me so?
