When the latest version of Supergirl debuted, a good deal of fandom recoiled in horror. What could they possibly have been basing their character designs off of? it was asked. She doesn't even look *human.* And who would wear stuff like that, anyway?

And, well. I'm not saying I disagree....

My brain hurts, and not just because I spent the last couple hours looking at pictures of Paris Hilton.

To think I was worried about finding reasons to use the new icon.website statistics

AIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK

You know the worst part? Paris Hilton totally looks LESS terrifying to me now.

From: [identity profile] burntcopper.livejournal.com

I'm just scared that Paris has more internal organs than S-girl.

From: [identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com

I don't know - in a couple of the shots, that seems a bit questionable...

alskdjf *brain breaks*

I think that has to be one of the Seven Signs of the Apocalypse. It really has to be.

From: [identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com

Right after the rain of frogs but before the cataclysmic rip in space-time?

Now that you mention it, the timing *is* suspicious...

Is it just me, or does Kara look healthier and more modestly dressed than Paris in a lot of those pictures?

From: [identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com

*nods* And in a couple, her torso is actually *proportionally smaller*!

That's...I mean...I just...there are...

THE HORROR! THE HORROR!

I think that covers it.

From: [identity profile] caia-comica.livejournal.com

EEEEEEEEEEEK!

At least this is less personally problematic than the theory going 'round somewhere to the effect that Hal Jordan = Paris Hilton.

From: [identity profile] caia-comica.livejournal.com

I take no credit for the theory. Ask one of these people (http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml?int=hal+jordan%3Dparis+hilton)!

From: [identity profile] vagabondsal.livejournal.com

You've never heard Paris Hilton say that? That's, like, her thing--she gets a vapid expression (well, more vapid than usual) and, in a perfectly flat monotone, says, "That's hot."

From: [identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com

I have not! I have no tv! (Honestly, I probably wouldn't have recognized her if I wasn't specifically doing a Google search.)

So I was concerned for a moment there: Wait, "Paris Hilton broke my gay"? That's not what was supposed to happen...

;)

From: [identity profile] vagabondsal.livejournal.com

Hah! My gay is impervious! Legions of scantily-clad women bearing steaming hot toddies could not break my gay!

From: [identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com

Wow. With such a power, you could probably join the Justice League! Or at least the Legion of Superpets...

From: (Anonymous)

The vapid expression is because she's "sexy but nor sexual."

That might not be an exact quote, but it's the gist of it. The idea being that she's hot but she has no desire for things that are hot herself. Her job is not to see, but to be seen. Which is really creepy, but fits accounts of the infamous sex tapes - in which she is bored enough to start talking on the phone, while, um.....

And also (sadly) makes a sick sort of sense if she was actually used as a model for some female comic book characters.

I was going to have lines across matching up the proportions, but that juet seemed like too much work.

Er, wow, that's...convincing. Eep.

Why would anyone think basing Supergirl on Paris Hilton was a good idea? My brain hurts.

Also, oh dear God, what is that sticking out from under her pink dress?

Damn. Talk about taking one for the team. I am both scared and in awe of the fact that your brain and eyeballs didn't melt completely while doing this.

Well, I think that they were *already* leaking out my ears from the moment it occurred to me... and then, not wanting to be alone, I fought bravely to *spread* the pain.

(The team might have been better off without this insight, really.)

I think you may have a point. It disturbs me to no end that DC think we would rather have...this then Linda Danvers. I wonder if they will ever clue in that the majority of their readership is no longer 14 year old boys.

From: [identity profile] odditycollector.livejournal.com

I have a hard time believing that this is even what 14 year old boys would want - but then again, I've never been one, so I shouldn't talk.

It's just. Proportions, please. And pants. I am not difficult to please!

From: [identity profile] the-eleven.livejournal.com

Hmm. I don't really remember 14 anymore but I'm sure none of this would have bothered me nearly as much as it does now. But um, yeah that's scary. /shudder

I never realized how hated the new Supergirl was untill today. Im not going to sit here and disagree with you on the paris hilton thing, 'cause at the very least her poses had to have been "inspired" byt Paris. *shudder*

But I actually kind of like the new Kara. I find this costume a LOT better than the White/Blue one Linda wore. Of course, not better than Matrix/Kara the First. It seems to just be a kind of modern take on the classic design, as I do know people who would wear halfshirts and such.

I guess it could be worse, at least there isn't 50 panty shots in the first 2 pages like there was in the 80s series haha. I was glad to see, as much as I HATE The New artists (Turner and Churchil? Supergirl is really the only character I Follow, So Im not sure.) That even when her skirt flips, at least it's semi-"Modest" (For a Comic character that is :p)

I also feel the new costume looks a lot better in the Legion of Super heroes series. It's still "Sexy" but not in a bad way. But I do dig the gold trim on her costume :p

Anyway I hope you didn't take my response a bad way, Im definetley not challenging your opinions, I just found your post interesting and thought I'd comment :)

She's not, though. Not on her own merits, at any rate. Most of the complaints around are about the awful artwork and aimless story.

That even when her skirt flips, at least it's semi-"Modest"
(And this is why Kara needs a new costume (http://dryponder.livejournal.com/105356.html)! But) it's not, though. It's a tease. When the skirt flutters, the readers are just *barely* denied that panty-shot, leaving it to the imagination. (Or, if they're *lucky*, that next gust of wind.) And in any case, the skirt doesn't cover any *more* than underwear would.

And Barry Kitson's version more or less works because he doesn't insist on drawing up-skirt angles all the time.

Kara remains one of my favourite characters - but I can't read her book without feeling ill. The art is appalling, and the writing is, generously, uneven. The story arc doesn't seem to be going anywhere and besides: "Don't treat me like jailbait!" "I'm not good at thinking!" Riiiight. Joe Kelly is usually a writer I enjoy, but he's making a mess of this.

Anyway I hope you didn't take my response a bad way, Im definetley not challenging your opinions, I just found your post interesting and thought I'd comment :)
Not that there's anything wrong with challenging someone's opinions... ;)

From: [identity profile] alisonchainsv1.livejournal.com

Oops actually that furst statement I made wasn't actually directed at your post, as much as it was my thoughts after reading various message boards and LJs. (Yours was the only one that actually seemed interesting to me, so you "Lucky" person you got my response :p)

I personally wouldn't mind a new costume. But I've really grown to like the current one, WHEN IAN CHURCHILL GOES NO WHERE NEAR IT. (I can't even begin to state my hatered over the artists that draw ALL female characters as nothing more than sex objects. But thats just me)

Like, I normally don't care too much if there is something as silly as an upskirt like that in a comic, as long as it's not every issue, and in every way possible. I really like the way she looks in The Legion book, her skirt fits higher up on her hips, and it's pretty much always down as far as I can remember. I think I'm just glad to see a new variation of the costume that is somewhat modern looking, and not just a 100% rehash of the original, or the "Classic: (For lack of better term) Version. And thank's for that link, I checked out a few of those entries so far and Im loving it.

Yeah... That's a MAJOR issue that needs to be fixed. I personally wouldn't mind seeing the book become more about Kara as a person for awhile just to devolp her character better. I dont mind her being angsty, as long as it's not as over done as it has been. I think they can (If they tried) work a really good story out of this. And considering Supergirl is my favorite character ever, I am REALLY hoping they do. I kind of liked that Christmas story with her, I liked her personality in it a bit better.

Bah, Im tired not sure my thoughts are coming our right haha.

Fair 'nuff! I've just had a few people tell me "Yeah! I hate her too!" and I so hate working from false premises.

Also EXACTLY THE SAME FACE. Him and Turner. The women have to pretty much wear name tags.

I really really despise the costume. It looks ugly and unbalanced to me (in a really porny way, but even if I pretend to ignore that). I can stomach it when Kitson or the occasional other artist pencils, but it still makes me unhappy. Still, I cast no judgment if you disagree.

Also, I feel very strongly that if she's going to fly around, she needs pants of some sort.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing the book become more about Kara as a person for awhile just to devolp her character better.

I think that's what they're *trying* to do now. It probably went like this:

Kelly: And I'd like to explore her character a little. Make her seem like a real teenage girl.
Berganza: Awesome! What's a real teenage girl?
Kelly: I, uh. I was, uh. Hoping *you'd* seen one before.
Churchill: Oh! I have!
Berganza: Great! Where?
Churchill: In magazines.
Kelly: ... I'm not sure Greg Land really needs the comp--
Churchill: *Tabloid* magazines. Paris Hilton was a teenage girl, right?
Berganza: Well, we *do* have visual evidence she's female.
Kelly: Okay, I've got it. Jack Nicholson said the secret to writing women is to think of a man, and then take away reason and accountability.
Berganza: He did?
Kelly: In a movie.
Berganza: Did it have teenage girls in?
Kelly: No, but it had Helen Hunt.
Berganza: Close enough. She's pretty blond.
Kelly: And teenage girls like boys.
Churchill: And horses! It might be fun to draw horses.
Kelly: I was talking about dating, actually.
Churchill: So was I.
Berganza: I don't think real teenage girls date horses.
Churchill: Sometimes they do.
Berganza: ...
Kelly: ...
Churchill: Oh, those wacky *Tabloid* magazines.
